Technology, where has it taken us?

One of my new roommates is watching the movie "You've Got Mail,"  One of those cute Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan romance movies.  I was thinking of the internet then and now.  When that movie was made only the schools in bigger cities had internet.  It was all dial up, it took anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes for a webpage to download (depending on how much junk was animated).  Of all my friends, only one of them had internet, and the dancing baby videos were the biggest thing on the net.  Now, just about all classrooms have at least on computer with internet.  For the most part it is wireless.  All I know about wireless is that it's not hooked up to a cable.  I still don't know the different between a modem and a router.  To me a router is a wood-working tool. ;)  And nearly every home has internet access, most with 2-3 computers on the internet.  Along with the internet comes i-tunes, Netflix, Youtube, Facebook and countless other websites that are for social networking.  It's great that all this information is now available to us and it's easier to keep in touch with long lost friends.  However, I sometimes wonder if people care more about their cyber social life more than they care about their real life.  Food for thought.
